Colorado Hunters Safety Practice Test

Why is wasting game meat illegal or unethical, and what should you do if you cannot use all meat?

Wasting meat is acceptable if you can't eat it.

Wasting meat is wasteful and disrespectful to the animal; seek to utilize as much as possible, donate if appropriate, and comply with regulations for disposal.

The idea being tested is the expectation to use game meat fully and treat the animal with respect. Wasting meat is seen as wasteful and disrespectful because the animal gave its life for you, so hunters are encouraged to salvage as much edible meat as possible. Laws or regulations often require salvaging edible portions and may penalize waste, reinforcing the ethical standard to avoid leaving usable meat behind. If you can’t use all the meat, pursue options to put it to good use: share with people who can eat it, donate to a local food bank or charity where allowed, or arrange for a processor to salvage what you can and dispose of the rest according to regulations. If meat cannot be salvaged, dispose of it properly under local rules—do not leave it in the field. The goal is to minimize waste and respect the animal through responsible handling and lawful disposal.

You should leave the meat to spoil in the field.

Only taxidermy preserves meat.
